Communication Style Interactive Exercise | Advanced Storyline Programming & JavaScript

📌 Overview

This project transformed a static, print-based assessment into an engaging, interactive digital experience. Originally a Microsoft Word handout used for self-reflection, the resource was reimagined as a gamified eLearning activity to help employees better understand their communication styles—supporting more productive conversations during review cycles and in day-to-day interactions.

The final product was a hybrid course built in Articulate Rise with a custom-coded Storyline 360 interaction that calculated personalized communication style results through a drag-and-drop activity and advanced scoring logic.

🧩 The Challenge

The original resource was outdated, impractical in a remote-first environment, and limited in interactivity. Key challenges included:

Converting a paper-based, self-scored worksheet into a digital experience that felt engaging and intuitive
Translating nuanced scoring logic into a functional, automated system
Managing multiple slides of conditional triggers and custom variables to capture and calculate learner input
Ensuring the interaction remained user-friendly, scalable, and accessible inside the Rise environment

✅ The Solution

The new version of the course invites users to select traits that resonate with them through a drag-and-drop card interaction. Each selection contributes to a score associated with one of four communication styles—Analytical, Driver, Expressive, and Steadfast—represented by suits (Diamonds, Spades, Hearts, Clubs).

On the back end, the course uses:

Custom variables and triggers on every interaction slide
Execute JavaScript triggers to calculate and display scores dynamically
Storyline-Rise integration for a seamless, responsive experience
Logic to handle ties and weighted scoring, built in collaboration with ChatGPT

What once required manual tallying is now a guided, self-paced experience that delivers immediate, actionable insight.

🎨 Design Challenge

Each interaction slide had to be individually programmed to ensure the correct assignment of values, creating a unique complexity. Mapping out the scoring logic—and coding it in JavaScript to dynamically calculate results—was a technically intricate process that tested the limits of both Storyline and instructional creativity.

Adding polish to the final experience required thoughtful UI decisions, user flow mapping, and troubleshooting edge cases (including tie logic and reset options).

🎯 Audience and Delivery

Target Audience:
Employees participating in performance review cycles and team development activities.

Delivery Method:
The course was delivered through a LMS and shared during annual performance reviews as a communication resource. It is available as a standalone resource or pre-work before coaching and feedback sessions, offering learners immediate, personalized insight into their communication tendencies.

🛠 Tools Used

I led the project end-to-end—from concept through execution—merging creativity, technical problem-solving, and user experience design.

Tools used included:

Articulate Storyline 360 – primary development platform
Articulate Rise – to house and deliver the final course
Canva – for creating visual assets and card designs
ChatGPT – to generate and troubleshoot JavaScript logic
Review 360 – to manage SME and stakeholder reviews

An Execute JavaScript trigger was used to calculate results, pulling data from Storyline variables and running them through a designated formula. The code also accounted for ties.
